The first world Expo to be held in the Middle East opened its pavilions on October 1st, 2021, in Dubai. Showcasing as its centerpiece the Al Wasl Plaza, the world’s largest unsupported dome with 65m (214 ft) in height and 130m (426 ft) in diameter.
Designed by Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture, the dome serves as a 360-degree projection surface (25,380 m2 /273,188 sqft) creating the largest immersive experience in the world.
We were commissioned to engineer, fabricate and install 42 turbine-like enclosures, designed to protect six 4K, 40,000-lumen laser projectors each while blending with the architectural language employed within the trellis superstructure lattice.
The double-curvature outer shell was fabricated in aluminum, employing an in-house developed hydroforming machine custom-made for this project. It hosts not only laser projectors, but a complex array of mechanisms, sensors, moving platforms, MEP, Insulation, and HVAC systems.
