GFRC panels
520 West 28th Street is a luxury apartment building in New York City designed by Zaha Hadid Architects, featuring iconic design elements such as the green wall and pool wall on the amenities floor next to an indoor pool. Inspired by the rippling effect of two water droplets colliding on a pond. We were commissioned to fabricate the panels for this wall on GFRC (glass fiber reinforced concrete). This iconic design element measures 4' x 10' each, weighing approximately 700 pounds, and is supported by a "Z clip" system embedded in the panels.
The installation process was challenging due to the narrow maneuvering space. For each project, we analyze logistics all the way through fabrication to installation where we can also get involved even if our team will not install it directly. For this project, we designed and fabricated a trolley to assist with the installation, which was able to move, rotate, and position the panels at the correct level. The panels were installed after the floor and ceiling were finished, leaving a small gap of only 1 inch above and below the panels.
We fabricated the panels in our workshop in Mexico. Once complete, they were shipped to NYC for installation by a NY union company.
