GFRC panels, metallic rooftops, and
onyx bridge
Terrazas is a private residence in Nuevo León, Mexico designed by Wallace E. Cunningham Architects. The residence consists of two independent volumes connected by a custom-made onyx bridge and features wave- like roofs made of stainless steel-covered GRFC (glass fiber reinforced concrete). Kinetica was commissioned to fabricate the roofs, onyx bridge, and reflective white façade for the residence.
We suggested the fabrication of the concave and convex waves in GFRC rooftop because its large dimensions and to control the natural contractions once exposed to exterior conditions. These were later meticulously covered with stainless steel sheets, while inner gutters and slopes were incorporated to ensure efficient water drainage and easy maintenance.
The original design proposal was using white marble for the façade panels. But due performance, lightweight requirements, and malleable properties, we suggested using GFRC. We fabricated extra-large molds for the façade panels, some of these featured up to 8 visible faces. In order to get seamless faces, we designed glass fiber reinforced plastic (FRP) molds for maximum reusability and meticulously sealing the molds' pores achieving an automotive-like glossy finish. Extensive calibration and study of the GFRC mixture with white concrete ensured color preservation and minimized maintenance requirements even when exposed to outdoor conditions.
The panels were ready for installation without additional treatment and were carefully transported from our workshop to the construction site by ground. With the aid of advanced technology and precise digital fabrication techniques, Kinetica ensured seamless assembly.
In addition to the GFRC elements, we fabricated and install the custom-made onyx bridge panels and structure. It has an illuminating system incorporated. From the interior, the bridge appeared to float, while from the patio, it seamlessly blended into the floor. Some onyx pieces were pre-installed, while others were securely affixed and sealed on-site, ensuring durability and visual integrity.
Because of this project, Kinetica was awarded The Cemex Award for Innovation in Construction in 2014.
